This year’s motto was: “Music makes the people come together”. Participants were eight teenagers and two group leaders from each partnership regions and cities: Kiryat Ono, Israel; Liaocheng, China; Usak, Turkey; Radomsko, Poland; Waukesha County, USA and from the Kreis Offenbach. History The idea of a multinational youth camp was born in 2002 in the district of Offenbach. Since then it took place in a rotating system in each partner region starting in Germany in 2002, Poland in 2003, 2004 in Turkey and 2005 in the United States. On the occasion of the 175th existence of the Kreis Offenbach all partners were invited to Germany this year. Objective The aim of the exchange is to allow young people to learn from other cultures, beliefs and ways of life and to practice their language skills and intercultural capacities. Confronting young people of different cultures it’s intended to attack and dismantle prejudices, known as cultural stereotypes. At the same time they developed positive feelings about the partner countries and a respectful dealing with strangers and unknown attitudes and living. The long-term and overall objective to the multinational youth meeting is to consolidate the partnership ring and pave the way for further meetings generated by the contacts to support the mobility of citizens. Planning Program For the first time we introduced the international youth camp under one slogan: We sat on a proven medium that connects people: music. As a universal language music has been proved to build a platform for nonverbal communication regardless in the face of linguistic and cultural origin and in addition, music is simply the linking element existing between all young people. Music, as the red thread through the program, inspired several workshops, the joint appearance at the end of the camp, the visit of a classical concert and the guided tour across the broadcasting station of the Hessischer Rundfunk (Hessian radio). The workshops were held at five days, and were instructed by professional musicians. The young people could choose between dance, drumming, Camp Song Composing with instrumental accompaniment and a radio group. To get to know the host country, the program included tours and trips in the surrounding area. Insights into the German infrastructure, landscape and culture were given to the young people by a guided tour in a German family business, a private brewery; A trip to Heidelberg and the Odenwald, a boat trip on the Main and a trip to the state capital, Wiesbaden. International Youth Camp 2007: Music Makes The People Come Together 4 As a possibility of cultural interexchange among the participating countries we chose a form of presentation of each nationality, based on the experience of previous camps. New was just, that we subordinated the presentations each under a certain theme (general, politics, sports lifestyle, music and educational-system) to set limits to the wide field of national cultures. Interactive elements of the program were the visit of a ropes challenge course at the outset of the camp, the museum "Dialogue in Darkness" and the visit to the “Anne Frank Museum in Frankfurt. To discuss the program with foreign partners, in June 2007, all partners were invited at a preparatory meeting. At that meeting the Israeli leader, a representative of the Chinese delegation, the German leadership and the workshop leader took part. All the partners were as early as possible informed on this year’s music-topic, so that they announced the meeting in their country accordingly. By that it was ensured that in the major part music-interested youngsters signed up and participated in the meeting. Implementation and evaluation of the program The music workshops were occupied internationally, and confronted all the participants to major challenges: In the instrumental workshop, for example, the participants had to compose a harmonious camp melody, with a Chinese and Turkish flute and a “Knopfaccordeon”, mainly known in the eastern region, played by a young Polish, what succeeded. The participants had fun in the workshops and played their part actively, not at least because it was intended to work purposefully and jointly to the closing ceremony. This was however the highlight of the program. As part of the major closing event, whose host was district administrator Peter Walter, the results of the music workshops were presented. Invited were politicians, volunteers and full-time basis in the International Youth Work workers, parents and young people who were involved in previous Youth Camps. The program of the evening was structured in such a manner, that individual groups of countries began to give a song or a dance. Following the workshops presented their results; the youngsters were now then united by the music. The whole event was a great success and, as expected, noted in the press duly. The opportunity to present themselves in front of a bigger audience wasn’t only given to the young people by the final presentation. To perform their respective culture, the youngsters had to prepare contributions in the run-up to the camp. This Part required on the one hand, that they reflect their own cultural identity and history, and on the other, to recognize and internalize the foreign culture and live. For many of them, it was a special challenge, to present themselves in English language in front of the whole group, but even this barrier they took up with growing security. That it’s not just history but rather the presence that moves the young people was shown in the Anne Frank-Museum. The visit of the museum was an open offer from the camp management and has been perceived by the young German, Israeli and Polish group. The fate of Anne Frank was the starting point for a lively and enthusiastic discussion. The question was thrown in the round, if whether the attendant young people were of the opinion that, as a consequence of German history, the country needs to be under the control of international supervision. International Youth Camp 2007: Music Makes The People Come Together 5 In the discussion, it was stressed that Germany now is a "cool" country, but not immune to xenophobic tendencies, and that here, as elsewhere, civil courage from individuals is needed. The fact that Germany gives a good impression was also confirmed in the discussion with the country MPs to which the young people, in the wake of the guided tour in Wiesbaden Castle, were invited. It was spoken about the planned tuition fees and the ways people can go to prevent it. Ultimately the German representatives wanted to know from the young people if there is something about Germany they don’t like. The almost unanimous, and only answer was, that only the carbonated water would be displeased, complies with the statements made by the evaluation sheets, in which the young emphasized, how well they were during their stay in Germany. Outlook The good mood during the camp was owed to the very respectful, humorous and open handling of the young people among themselves. During the two weeks a pleasant momentum developed itself that significantly contributed to the success of the camp. The young people used the opportunity to know each other over a period of two weeks in a restricted space, as they lived in mixed "Combi-Nations" in their rooms. They’ve seen that the peers from the other side of the world have the same concerns and needs, stress with parents and school, as well as fun with friends and family. They learned to recognize and accept about the similarities and differences in the "Life Style” and returned back home with a new awareness of their own situation. Many friendships have been made during the two weeks and most of them have the chance to stay in contact by e-mail, Chat Room and telephone and a possible reunion, whether in form of a short visit or an internship can not be ruled out. For all participants from the six nations the encounter was a very intense and unifying experience. The International Youth Camp now, thanks to the commitment of many partners in the partner regions, became a real institution on its own. The city of Kiryat Ono, partner in Israel, will align the camp next year, followed by the Liaocheng City in China, in 2008 at the series. Camp 2007: Music Makes The People Come Together 40 The Good Bye International Youth Camp 2007: Music Makes The People Come Together 41 Excerpts From The Evaluation 1. Which expectations did you have before the camp ? Originally, this trip, I thought was going to be easier to go along with but this trip is now so hard to leave. I thought that this camp was going to be a lot of fun. That we were going to make a lot of international friends, together we were going to travel Germany and discuss each others cultures. I thought exactly what the schedule had planned for us. I also thought the hostel looked pretty cool too! (…..) I expected to meet new people and try to understand new cultures. I wanted to see Germany and learn as much as possible. USA I thought this is gonna be boring and I would not go to the camp, but now I'm happy to be here. I think it will be fun and I will meet new people. I thought the camp would be cool, interesting. (….) that there would be only music freaks and that it will be terrible. GERMANY My expectations were to come here and meet some new people, learn about their cultures and understand where they were from. I wanted to improve my German and English in the camp too. (…) I was kind of expecting to feel a bit left out since I didn't know any of the Israeli guys. I was surprised to hang out with most of guys who weren't from Israel.(…) I expected to meet many people and learn a lot. I wasn't confident that I'll be able to connect with everyone.... but at least with some. ISRAEL Picking up my English, getting to know nice people, getting more information about Germany, having a good time there (…) I expected, that it will be a camp full of people, who love music and that I will meet some new friends. POLAND I hope to make some foreign friends and show myself and let everyone here know some more about China. And learn something from everyone here.(…) I hope that I can make some friends and learn a lot of different countries' knowledge. And have a different kind of life than I had before. And have a good time to have a rest. Then to come back and be a good member. (…) This international camp will be active, lovely, interesting and valuable. But the biggest difficulty must be language. CHINA I had some expectations such as making new friends, improving my English, to visit a new country and finally flying. TURKEY 2. What kind of experiences did you make? I made friends. I learned way more about these people's cultures than I dreamed. I had a ton of fun. As for traveling Germany, we traveled Frankfurt. The hostel was nice but when you have four dudes in one room it gets messy. International Youth Camp 2007: Music Makes The People Come Together 42 (…) I met so many more great people than I could have imagined. I am so happy and optimistic about the world after finding out how many great people there are. I was right about thinking I'd meet good friends. The only thing I expected that didn't happen is that maybe the Chaperones would be annoying and stuff but they were so great and I love all of them all - just as much as the kids! Perfect two weeks! (…) I learned how to communicate without using English and I learned how to work with people who are completely different. (…) We are all so alike even though we live differently and think a little different. They’re all amazing people: Chinese, Germans, Israeli, Polish, Turkish and US too. (…) I got a deeper understanding of other cultures and their realities. There’s no better way to learn about a country, than the way we learned on this trip USA People are friendly and communication goes on perfectly without the problem of language. A lot of things like teamwork and how to get on with each other. (…) I learned that everyone who gets together should help each other and encourage everyone to do their best. I also make great progress about my English. (…) Self confidence and the spirit of teamwork CHINA English(…)A lot of new words from other languages. GERMANY I learned how important it is to have friends from different places around the world. (…) Making the best time you can. I learned to appreciate a good conversation. (…) I learned that I can talk through differences, that Wisconsin rocks and that Germany is a beautiful place full of good people. And of course - courses in every language. (…) I learned a lot about different cultures, but more so, I learned how similar we are deep down. (…) In the camp I learned that people, even speaking different languages can communicate in different ways - like music. I met some really nice people and get some friends from around the world, which is so bizarre but so awesome too. (…). I found that there is common ground with anyone, even if he is from the other side of the globe, thinks differently and has a different lifestyle. I never felt alone in this camp to my surprise. ISRAEL I learned English and German. (…) To integrate myself to people from other countries. POLAND This camp changed my ideas about future and I learned that every country has a lot of nice people. (…) In this camp I learned that the whole world can live in peace. It was very important for me. TURKEY International Youth Camp 2007: Music Makes The People Come Together 43 3. What did you like best? The people, no doubt. I didn't meet one person I didn't like! (…) I liked having time to hang out and really creating a band with these people. (…)The day trips: especially Heidelberg, “das Felsenmeer” and Seligenstadt. (…) My favorite part about the camp was definitely the people. I just love everyone so much. My second favorite is the culture I experienced. USA I liked chillin' on the couch downstairs with people from the 6 different countries and being to be able to talk to them in English / German and even a little French with Flo. (…) Everything, everyone and I mean it. (…)I guess I liked the best the nighttime. When we had free time to just be together and get to know each other. ISRAEL People from different countries (…) I did like the presentations about music and politics best. (…) The climbing. POLAND I like the music workshop best! (…)I like singing songs together and boating on the river. Also climb the hill. (…) I like all activities, games. Especially the ropes challenge course and rock climbing. And of course a handsome boy. (…) The karaoke night may be the most memorable thing! We dressed vice versa! CHINA I liked best my new friends at the camp. (…) This camp is different from others, because it is really international, that’s why I liked it most. TURKEY That we can talk to all people from other countries (…) The best was to go out at night and the navy on the main was very funny. GERMANY 4. What didn't you like? I Think shopping and I think there was to much of it. (..) I didn´t like the rules, that boys and girls can´t be in the girls rooms cause we like being together. ISRAEL I wish the camp was a bit longer, because I didn't have time to get to know everyone. GERMANY Every day I am very tired. POLAND I hate the carbonated water and didn't like the cold breakfast. (…) the cool food, In China we never eat cool food. CHINA I think nothing I don't like at all. Because everyone is very friendly. TURKEY Didn't like the dinners International Youth Camp 2007: Music Makes The People Come Together 44 5. What is your impression about Germany Germany is a land of so much history - it shows in the streets, but most of all you can see it in the people.
